Dear Parents and Families,

I hope this message finds you well. I am writing to share important information about a recent incident on our campus and to express our deep commitment to enhancing the safety and security of our community. Recently, we experienced a motor vehicle theft at the Walker Avenue Garage, and earlier this year, we noticed a concerning rise in similar incidents. We understand the distress and anxiety such events can cause, and we want to assure you that we are taking proactive steps to address these concerns head-on.

To help protect our community, we are offering free steering wheel locks, which have proven to be an effective deterrent against theft. Students and staff can obtain one at any time from the UMBC Police station with a valid university ID. This measure is just one part of our comprehensive effort to enhance safety on campus.

Additionally, we are implementing a series of security enhancements, including:

  • Increasing patrols in parking garages, lots, and around residence halls to provide a visible and reassuring security presence.
  • Conducting more frequent and random checks across campus at all times of day and night to deter potential incidents.
  • Partnering with a private security company to expand our vehicle patrols, further strengthening our security efforts.
  • Installing additional security cameras in all parking garages to help prevent and document any criminal activities.

We kindly ask for your support in reminding students to always lock their vehicles and keep valuables secured and out of sight. It's crucial that we all stay alert and report any suspicious activities to the UMBC Police immediately at 410-455-5555.

Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of everyone in our campus community is our highest priority. With your cooperation and attention to these precautions, we can work together to create a safer environment for everyone.

Thank you for your understanding, support, and partnership in keeping our campus secure.

Warm regards,

Bruce Perry ’97
Chief of Police, UMBC
