Mid-Semester Check-In

Posted over 3 years ago  in Student Success.

We have reached the mid-point of the Fall 2021 semester! This is a great time for students to pause and think about how their semester is going and check in with professors after class or during their office hours if they haven't done so already. A few questions students should consider asking themselves:

  • Am I meeting my academic goals?
  • Am I experiencing any academic difficulty?
  • Have I received any Academic Alerts?
  • What grade do I currently have in each of my classes?
  • Do I need any extra support?

  • If your student is facing challenges, we highly recommend that they take advantage of these academic resources:

  • Online Learning Resources
  • Academic Success Center
  • Student Disability Services
  • The Counseling Center
  • Office for Academic and Pre-Professional Advising
  • Academic Standards and Policy Administration - Whom Do I Contact?
  • Shady Grove Resources
  • Withdrawing from a Course

  • In some cases, withdrawing from a course may be the best option. The last day to withdraw from individual course(s) with a "W" notation on your transcript is Wednesday, November 10th. As stated in the Fall 2021 Academic Calendar, after November 10th, students will only be able to request a complete semester withdrawal.

We strongly encourage all students to consult with their academic advisor before withdrawing from any course. Here are some important points to consider:

Financial aid or scholarships could be affected by a course withdrawal - students should talk with a counselor in the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships before withdrawing from a course.

Students must be enrolled full-time to live in on-campus housing. If plans to withdraw from a course would reduce your student's credits below 12, they should first discuss their situation with their community director.

You can contact our office for mid-semester assistance at 410-455-2729 or OAPA@umbc.edu. Wishing you the very best for the rest of Fall 2021!
