Women's Cross Country & Men's Basketball Squads Record Highest America East GPA's In Their Sports
UMBC's 2022-23 women's cross country and men's basketball squads were recognized for their prowess in the classroom by the America East Conference.
The league announced the 2022-23 Walter Harrison Academic Cup standings and both squads turned in the top combined grade point average in their respective sports.
The women's cross country team posted a 3.74 GPA, which was the fourth-highest mark of any America East team this past year. "I am full of pride for the hard-working women on the UMBC Cross Country Team for earning the highest GPA among all Cross Country teams in the America East!" said head coach Mike DuPaul. "Their outstanding GPA is a reflection of the hard work they put in every day in the classroom. They are amazing students, incredible athletes, and even better people."
The men's basketball team recorded a 3.21 GPA to outpace their hardwood rivals. "I'm extremely proud of the success we've had both in the classroom and on the court," stated head coach Jim Ferry. "We continue to bring in high-character guys who work hard and understand the importance of academics."
America East student-athletes averaged a 3.37 GPA overall in 2022-23, the second-highest in conference history.
All nine America East institutions averaged better than a 3.19 GPA in 2022-23 and it's the 18th consecutive year America East student-athletes have averaged better than a 3.0 GPA.
